Hans Habiger Tel. +49 (0) 30 243-13-033 <habiger@eyz-kino.de> AMERICA – HEAVEN OR HELL? offers many works never before seen in Germany. The festival kicks off with Scott Ritter’s controversial IN SHIFTING SANDS, which will receive its German premiere at the Eiszeit Kino on Thursday, July 3. Ritter, a former U.S. marine and veteran of Desert Storm, was later appointed Chief Weapons Inspector for the United Nations mission in Iraq. In the film, he uses interviews with his colleagues and high-tension footage from UN inspections to show how his team destroyed Iraq's weapons of mass destruction and its capability to make such weapons by 1996. The U.S. government refused to accept that finding, insisting that the deadly sanctions on Iraq be maintained. Ritter resigned from his post in 1998, claiming that the United States had put him under pressure to find a way to provoke Saddam's regime and create a pretext for a U.S. bombing of Iraq. Audrey Brohey's and Gerard Ungerman's PLAN COLOMBIA takes a look at the forgotten drug war in Colombia, where the United States is paying billions of dollars to build up the brutal military and support the right-wing government. During the 20 years of the U.S.-backed drug war in the Andes, the amount of cocaine imported into the United States has INCREASED two-fold. Why does the U.S.-financed, multi-billion-dollar "Plan Colombia" focus on building up the country's brutal military and spraying coca fields in rebel-held parts of the country -- when coca is also grown in many parts of Colombia that are not being sprayed? The film sheds light on drug-trafficking, civil struggle, and the impact of the chemical-spray program carried out by U.S. defense contractor Dyncorp. Includes interviews with Noam Chomsky and the late Senator Paul Wellstone - the crusading antiwar Democrat from Minnesota, who was killed together with his wife and daughter in a plane crash shortly before his expected reelection in November 2002. AVA Congress guest speaker Phyllis Bennis will be on hand at the German premiere of PLAN COLOMBIA on Saturday, July 5th, when she will introduce that film and HIDDEN WARS OF DESERT STORM, in which she is interviewed.
In a fast and furious style and narrated by rap legend Paris, AFTER MATH investigates the many unanswered and uninvestigated questions of the Sept. 11 attacks, including negligence by military officials in not reacting to the hijackings in a timely fashion; proven links between the alleged hijackers, Pakistani intelligence (ISI) and CIA; the role of oil in the Eurasian conflict; and the impact of post-911 legislation on American civil liberties. AFTER MATH features George Soros, Mary Schiavo (aviation disaster attorney), Nafeez Ahmed ("The War on Freedom"), David McMichael (former CIA analyst), Michel Chossudovsky (Author: War and Globalization), Peter Dale Scott (UC Berkeley) and Riva Enteen (Executive Director, SF National Lawyer's Guild). The Selection 2000 double feature (Monday evening) will be headed off by UNPRECEDENTED: THE STORY OF THE 2000 ELECTION, highlighting the questionable way that the Bush administration came to power. In the Monday-night double feature that gives the festival its name, the repeat screening of AFTER MATH will be coupled with a diametrically opposite vision of America in Rick Minnich's HEAVEN ON EARTH, which takes a look at life and business in Branson, Missouri (pop. 4,000) - the Christian fundamentalist counterpart to Las Vegas. This little town boasts six million visitors a year, thanks to its opulent variety shows on patriotic themes and the Life of Jesus. The program on Friday, July 4 will be dedicated
to the work of renegade indy TV journalist Jon Alpert. For over twenty
years, Alpert has managed to gain unprecedented access to the likes of
Saddam Hussein and Fidel Castro, and presented views of everyday life „behind
enemy lines“ you’re not likely to see on CNN or any other mainstream broadcaster
anywhere. We will be presenting a selection of his work from Iraq, including
a fascinating satellite dialogue between US and Iraqi youth on the eve
of the latest Gulf war.
